Project STEAM Role aspires to increase the number of girls of color who are exposed to, encouraged to participate in and are supported in STEAM career exploration.  This multi-level initiative endeavors to give girls who have a natural aptitude and curiosity for STEAM disciplines an opportunity to explore their interests. The project employs purposeful encouragement and fosters active participation from people of influence in girls’ lives.  The project melds guided STEAM activities and interaction with women currently involved in STEAM educational pursuits and careers into a program that recognizes and addresses challenges identified through current research on girls’ interest and involvement in STEAM.

 

Evidence presented in multiple studies makes it clear that there are fundamental factors that need to be addressed in the effort to involve more girls of color in the world of STEAM.  Project STEAM Role integrates a sustained outreach effort to educate and involve trusted people in girls’ lives.  They will be encouraged to participate as proponents and supporters of girls’ discovery of and involvement in STEAM.  Through the facilitation of programs that focus on exposure, support, and academic achievement, girls will have an opportunity to explore their interest in STEAM and garner a realistic perception of their ability to pursue STEAM careers.
